Quick Overview
Pterodactyl (and its successor Pelican) is the OG open-source game server management panel. It's battle-tested, has a large community, and powers thousands of hosting companies. But development has slowed, and many requested features remain unimplemented.
Forge Panel builds on the same foundation but adds everything hosting providers actually need out of the box — billing, tickets, referrals, a node marketplace, announcement system, Discord integration, and a plugin store. It's what Pterodactyl would be if it were designed as a complete hosting business platform.

Where Forge Wins
1. Built-in Billing (No WHMCS Needed)
This is the biggest differentiator. Pterodactyl has zero billing functionality. If you want to sell hosting, you need WHMCS ($15-30/mo), Blesta, or a custom solution. Forge has Stripe billing baked in — plans, subscriptions, invoices, and payment processing all within the panel.
2. Node Marketplace
Forge lets customers buy and deploy their own nodes directly from the panel. They get a one-line install script, automatic DNS, and the node connects to your panel instantly. This is a complete business model that Pterodactyl simply doesn't offer.
3. Staff Role System
Pterodactyl has two roles: admin and user. That's it. Forge has 6 staff tiers (Root Admin, Admin, Developer, Moderator, Support Staff, Helper) with 96 granular permissions. If you're running a hosting company with a team, this matters.
4. Integrated Support
Tickets, announcements, and a status page are all built into Forge. With Pterodactyl, you'd need separate tools (Freshdesk, Statuspage.io, etc.) — more subscriptions, more complexity, more things to maintain.
Where Pterodactyl Wins
1. Community Size
Pterodactyl has been around since 2015 and has a massive community. More tutorials, more third-party integrations, more people who can help if you get stuck. Forge is newer and still building its community.
2. Battle-Tested Stability
Thousands of hosting companies run Pterodactyl in production. It's proven at scale. Forge is built on the same core (Pelican), but the additional features are newer and less battle-tested.
3. Third-Party Ecosystem
There are dozens of themes, addons, and integrations built for Pterodactyl. Forge's plugin store is growing, but the selection is smaller right now.
🏆 Verdict
For hosting companies: Forge Panel is the clear winner. Built-in billing, marketplace, tickets, and staff roles save you $50+/mo in third-party tools and dozens of hours in integration work.
For personal use or established setups: If you're already running Pterodactyl with a working WHMCS setup and a large team familiar with it, switching may not be worth the migration effort. But for new deployments, Forge is the smarter choice.
For developers: Both are open source. Forge's plugin system and event-driven architecture make it more extensible long-term.
How to Migrate from Pterodactyl to Forge
Since Forge is built on the same Pelican foundation, migration is straightforward:
- Database: Forge uses the same schema as Pelican. A database migration script handles the conversion.
- Wings/Daemon: Forge uses Spark (its Wings fork) which is backwards-compatible. Existing nodes can connect.
- Eggs: Pterodactyl eggs are 100% compatible with Forge. Import them directly.
- Server data: No data migration needed — server files stay on the nodes.
