# Claude OS + ServiceBot Integration - Complete Setup Guide
**Date**: 2025-11-06
**Context**: Successfully integrated Claude OS knowledge export with ServiceBot chatbot
**Category**: Integration, Architecture, Troubleshooting
**Projects**: Claude OS, ServiceBot, Pistn
## Executive Summary
Successfully integrated Claude OS knowledge export with ServiceBot to create a standalone AI chatbot powered by Pistn project knowledge (11,867 documents). ServiceBot now operates independently without requiring Claude OS to run.
**Key Achievement**: Export-based architecture allows ServiceBot to be deployed anywhere with just a SQLite file, making it perfect for production use.
## Architecture Decision: Export vs Runtime
### Decision Made
Use **export-based architecture** instead of MCP runtime dependency.
### Rationale
1. **Standalone Deployment**: ServiceBot doesn't need Claude OS running
2. **Simpler Infrastructure**: One SQLite file contains all knowledge
3. **Better Performance**: Local reads, no network calls to Claude OS
4. **Easier Versioning**: Knowledge exports are versioned SQLite files
5. **Production Ready**: No complex dependencies to deploy
### Trade-offs Accepted
- Knowledge updates require re-export (not real-time sync)
- Slightly more manual process for updates
- Two separate systems to maintain
## Implementation Process
### 1. Export Knowledge from Claude OS
```bash
# Start Claude OS session
/claude-os-session start 'pistn'
# Export Pistn knowledge
/claude-os-export pistn --output ./exports
```
**Export Result**:
- File: `Pistn_export_20251106_201526.db` (98MB)
- Documents: 11,867 across 5 knowledge bases
- Embeddings: 11,866 vectors (768 dimensions)
- Model: `text-embedding-3-small` (OpenAI)
### 2. ServiceBot Configuration
**Environment Setup** (.env):
```bash
# AI Provider (OpenAI-only mode)
DEFAULT_AI_PROVIDER=openai
DEFAULT_MODEL=gpt-4o
EMBEDDING_MODEL=text-embedding-3-small
# Database
DATABASE_URL=postgresql+asyncpg://servicebot:servicebot@localhost:5432/servicebot
REDIS_URL=redis://localhost:6379/0
# CORS (MUST be JSON array format for Pydantic)
ALLOWED_ORIGINS=["http://localhost:3000","http://localhost:8000","http://localhost:5273"]
# Knowledge
KNOWLEDGE_DB_PATH=./data/pistn.db
```
**Critical Configuration Details**:
1. ALLOWED_ORIGINS must be JSON array, NOT comma-separated string
2. Use OpenAI for both chat and embeddings (consistency)
3. Virtual environment required on macOS (externally-managed-environment error)
### 3. Dependency Management
**Problem**: Original requirements.txt had conflicts
- `mcp==0.1.0` doesn't exist
- `mcp>=1.21.0` needs `httpx>=0.27.1` but anthropic/openai need `httpx<1`
**Solution**: Comment out MCP (not needed for export approach)
```python
# MCP (Model Context Protocol) - Skip for now, not needed for knowledge export approach
# mcp>=1.21.0
```
**Minimal Dependencies**:
```bash
pip install fastapi uvicorn python-dotenv openai numpy structlog \
websockets pydantic pydantic-settings sqlalchemy asyncpg redis
```
## Critical Bugs Fixed
### Bug 1: SQLAlchemy Reserved Keyword - `metadata`
**Error**:
```
sqlalchemy.exc.InvalidRequestError: Attribute name 'metadata' is reserved
when using the Declarative API
```
**Root Cause**: Both `Conversation` and `Message` models used `metadata` as column name, which conflicts with SQLAlchemy's internal `MetaData` class.
**Solution**: Rename column to `meta` throughout codebase
**Files Changed**:
1. `app/models/conversation.py`:
```python
meta = Column(JSON, default=dict) # was: metadata
```
2. `app/models/message.py`:
```python
meta = Column(JSON, default=dict) # was: metadata
```
3. `app/api/conversations.py`:
```python
conversation = Conversation(
dealer_id=conversation_data.dealer_id,
meta=conversation_data.metadata # was: metadata=...
)
```
4. `app/api/messages.py`:
```python
user_message = Message(
conversation_id=message_data.conversation_id,
meta=message_data.metadata # was: metadata=...
)
```
5. `app/websockets/handlers.py`:
```python
user_message = Message(
conversation_id=conversation_id,
meta=message_request.metadata # was: metadata=...
)
```
### Bug 2: Pydantic Validation Error - Field Alias
**Error**:
```
1 validation error for ConversationResponse
metadata
Input should be a valid dictionary [type=dict_type, input_value=MetaData(), input_type=MetaData]
```
**Root Cause**: After renaming database column to `meta`, Pydantic schema still expected `metadata` field. When loading from SQLAlchemy model, it found SQLAlchemy's internal `MetaData()` object instead.
**First Attempt (FAILED)**:
```python
metadata: Dict[str, Any] = Field(alias="meta")
```
This didn't work because `alias` is for serialization only.
**Working Solution**:
```python
# app/schemas/conversation.py
class ConversationResponse(BaseModel):
metadata: Dict[str, Any] = Field(
validation_alias="meta", # Read from 'meta' column
serialization_alias="metadata" # Serialize as 'metadata' in API
)
class Config:
from_attributes = True
populate_by_name = True
```
**Key Learning**:
- `validation_alias` tells Pydantic where to read FROM (database column name)
- `serialization_alias` tells Pydantic what to call it in output (API field name)
- `populate_by_name=True` allows both names to work
### Bug 3: Tailwind CSS Invalid Classes
**Error**:
```
[postcss] The 'border-border' class does not exist
```
**Root Cause**: Invalid Tailwind utility classes in `frontend/src/index.css`
**Solution**:
```css
@layer base {
body {
@apply bg-white text-gray-900; /* was: bg-background text-foreground */
font-feature-settings: "rlig" 1, "calt" 1;
}
/* Removed: * { @apply border-border; } */
}
```
### Bug 4: Database Setup
**Error**:
```
asyncpg.exceptions.InvalidAuthorizationSpecificationError: role "servicebot" does not exist
```
**Solution**:
```bash
psql -p 5432 postgres -c "CREATE USER servicebot WITH PASSWORD 'servicebot';"
psql -p 5432 postgres -c "CREATE DATABASE servicebot OWNER servicebot;"
```
## Testing & Verification
### System Status (Confirmed Working)
- ✅ API Server: http://localhost:8000
- ✅ Frontend UI: http://localhost:5273
- ✅ Knowledge: 11,867 Pistn documents loaded
- ✅ Database: PostgreSQL + Redis connected
- ✅ AI: OpenAI gpt-4o with real API key
- ✅ WebSocket: Real-time chat working
- ✅ Conversations: Creating successfully (201 Created)
- ✅ Messages: Processing successfully
### Actual Chat Test
User tested with 3 messages:
1. "how do the pistn basic appoitnments work?"
2. "you there?"
3. "Book Appointment"
All messages processed successfully with 2-6 second response times.
## Frontend Display Issue (UNRESOLVED)
**User Report**: "chatbot is not showing any answers, just the questions i asked it"
**Backend Logs Show Success**:
- Messages are being processed: "Chat message processed successfully"
- Responses are being saved to database
- No errors in backend logs
**Possible Causes** (needs investigation):
1. Frontend not displaying streamed chunks
2. WebSocket message format mismatch
3. Frontend component not rendering assistant messages
4. CSS issue hiding messages
5. JavaScript error in message rendering
**Next Step**: Debug frontend WebSocket message handling and component rendering.
## Phase 2: Pistn Integration (Planned)
### Current Limitation
ServiceBot has Pistn knowledge (read-only) but cannot perform actions:
- Cannot check dealer information
- Cannot check appointment availability
- Cannot book appointments
### Solution: Add Minimal Rails API to Pistn
```ruby
# app/controllers/api/v1/dealers_controller.rb
class Api::V1::DealersController < ApplicationController
before_action :authenticate_api_key
def show
dealer = Dealer.find(params[:id])
render json: {
id: dealer.id,
name: dealer.name,
hours: dealer.business_hours,
services: dealer.services.map(&:to_api_hash)
}
end
end
# app/controllers/api/v1/appointments_controller.rb
class Api::V1::AppointmentsController < ApplicationController
before_action :authenticate_api_key
def availability
# Return available slots for dealer/service/date
end
def create
# Book appointment
end
end
```
### Authentication
Use same PISTN_API_KEY from ServiceBot .env:
```ruby
def authenticate_api_key
unless request.headers['X-API-Key'] == ENV['PISTN_API_KEY']
render json: { error: 'Unauthorized' }, status: :unauthorized
end
end
```
## Key Learnings & Best Practices
### 1. Reserved Keywords in SQLAlchemy
**Never use these as column names**:
- `metadata` (reserved by Declarative API)
- `id` (unless you mean it)
- Python keywords (class, def, etc.)
**Use instead**:
- `meta`, `attrs`, `properties`, `extra`
### 2. Pydantic Field Aliases
**For database column name mismatches**:
```python
# Database has 'meta', API expects 'metadata'
metadata: Dict = Field(
validation_alias="meta", # Read from DB
serialization_alias="metadata" # Output in API
)
```
### 3. macOS Python Environment
**Always use virtual environment**:
```bash
python3 -m venv venv
source venv/bin/activate
```
Never use `pip3 install` globally on macOS (externally-managed-environment error).
### 4. Pydantic Settings Format
**List/Array fields need JSON format**:
```bash
# CORRECT
ALLOWED_ORIGINS=["http://localhost:3000","http://localhost:8000"]
# WRONG
ALLOWED_ORIGINS=http://localhost:3000,http://localhost:8000
```
### 5. Dependency Management
**When facing version conflicts**:
1. Identify if dependency is actually needed
2. Check if alternative approach exists (export vs runtime)
3. Only install what you need (not full requirements.txt)
4. Use prebuilt wheels when available (avoid Rust compilation)
## Architecture Benefits
### Export-Based Advantages
1. **Zero Runtime Dependencies**: No Claude OS needed in production
2. **Simple Deployment**: Just copy SQLite file + configure .env
3. **Versioned Knowledge**: Each export is a timestamped snapshot
4. **Fast Local Reads**: No network latency
5. **Easy Backup**: SQLite file is portable
### Future Scalability
When knowledge grows beyond SQLite:
1. **sqlite-vec**: Add vector extension (10x faster searches)
2. **Qdrant**: Dedicated vector DB (100x faster, local deployment)
3. **Pinecone**: Cloud vector DB (infinitely scalable)
**Migration path**: Export format remains same, just change vector search backend.
## Production Deployment Checklist

# Block System Deprecation Strategy
**Status**: Research & Planning Phase
**Date**: 2025-10-24
**Purpose**: Plan migration from custom Block templating engine to standard Rails views
---
## Current Block System Architecture
### What Are Blocks?
Blocks are PISTN's custom templating layer that allows CSRs to modify dealer-specific HTML/CSS/JS without code changes.
**Core Components**:
- **Block.rb** (1014 lines) - Hierarchical rendering engine
- **BlockSetting.rb** - Configuration & image handling
- **blocks.js** - Frontend behaviors
- **Admin UI** - Block editor interface
### How Blocks Work
#### 1. Hierarchical Structure (acts_as_tree)
```ruby
# Parent-child relationship with roles
parent_block
├── child_block (role: "header")
├── child_block (role: "content")
└── child_block (role: "footer")
```
#### 2. Template Substitution ({{...}} syntax)
```html
<!-- Variable substitution -->
<h1>{{account.name}}</h1>
<!-- Conditional logic -->
{{if account.has_appointments?}}
<div>{{yield.appointments}}</div>
{{/if}}
<!-- Ternary -->
{{account.is_active? ? 'Open' : 'Closed'}}
<!-- Loops -->
{{yield.services.each do |service|}}
<div>{{service.name}}</div>
{{/yield.services.each}}
```
#### 3. Whitelist Security
```ruby
# Only whitelisted methods can be called
WHITELIST = {
'account' => %w(name phone_number services ...),
'block' => %w(image_url ...),
'ANY' => %w(present? blank? to_s zero?)
}
```
#### 4. Account-Specific Content
- Universal blocks: `account_id = NULL`
- Account-specific: `account_id = specific_account`
- Group inheritance: Accounts inherit parent group's blocks
- Priority: Account-specific > Group > Universal
---
## Why Deprecate Blocks?
### Pain Points
#### Developer Experience
- ❌ 1000+ lines of state machine rendering logic
- ❌ Three languages in one file: HTML + Handlebars + Ruby
- ❌ No IDE support (syntax highlighting, autocomplete)
- ❌ Difficult to debug template logic
#### Maintenance & Testing
- ❌ Complex caching logic (cache invalidation bugs)
- ❌ Hard to unit test (requires full render context)
- ❌ N+1 query potential in template evaluation
- ❌ Security audits need constant whitelist review
#### Performance
- ❌ Interpretation layer (regex parsing, method lookup)
- ❌ Heavy context object passing
- ❌ Caching complexity adds overhead
#### User Experience (CSRs)
- ❌ Admin UI for block editing is clunky
- ❌ Learning curve (handlebars syntax)
- ❌ No real-time preview
- ❌ Error messages unhelpful
#### Architecture
- ⚠️ **Views Still Required**: Rails views exist anyway (blocks are a layer on top)
- ⚠️ **Duplication**: Both block template + Rails view exist
- ⚠️ **Migration Complexity**: Must maintain dual rendering for transition
---
## Migration Strategy
### Phase 1: Analysis & Mapping (Current)
**Tasks**:
1. ✅ Understand Block.rb rendering engine (done)
2. Identify all active blocks in production
3. Categorize blocks:
- Simple HTML passthrough
- Moderate complexity (some conditionals)
- Complex (loops, dynamic content)
4. Map each block to Rails view equivalent
5. Document {{}} syntax usage patterns
6. Identify which blocks use advanced features
**Block 112 Case Study** (Appointment Form):
```
TODO: Query production database
- Block structure
- {{}} syntax patterns
- Block settings used
- Conditional rendering logic
- Child blocks/context
```
### Phase 2: Create Replacement Views
**For Each Block Type**:
1. **Create Rails Partial/View**
```erb
<!-- app/views/account_specific/_appointment_form.html.erb -->
<%= form_for @appointment do |f| %>
<%= f.text_field :date %>
<%= f.text_field :time %>
<%= f.submit %>
<% end %>
```
2. **Move Whitelist Logic to Presenter**
```ruby
# app/presenters/account_presenter.rb
class AccountPresenter
def initialize(account)
@account = account
end
def appointment_link
# Only include if account has appointments enabled
link_to "Book Appointment", appointment_path if @account.appointments_enabled?
end
end
```
3. **Use Rails Helpers**
- Form helpers (form_for, form_with)
- Link helpers (link_to, button_to)
- Conditional helpers (if, unless)
- Loop helpers (each, collect)
### Phase 3: Gradual Migration
**Feature Flag Approach**:
```ruby
# config/initializers/feature_flags.rb
FEATURE_FLAGS = {
use_rails_views: false # Start as false, enable per account
}
# In views/controllers
if account.use_rails_views?
render :appointment_form_v2
else
render_block(112) # Old block system
end
```
**Per-Account Migration**:
- Add boolean `use_rails_views` to Account model
- Gradual rollout: test accounts → all dealers
- Monitor performance & error rates
- Easy rollback if issues
### Phase 4: Decommission
**Remove Block System**:
1. Delete Block rendering code
2. Remove block admin UI
3. Drop blocks/block_settings tables
4. Delete Block & BlockSetting models
5. Remove {{}} template syntax processor
6. Clean up views that use render_block()
---
## Implementation Steps
### Step 1: Research & Planning
- [ ] Query block 112 from production
- [ ] Document all {{}} patterns used
- [ ] Identify all active blocks
- [ ] Categorize by complexity
- [ ] Create mapping document
### Step 2: Build Replacement Views
- [ ] Create V2 views in app/views/account_specific/
- [ ] Create presenters in app/presenters/
- [ ] Move authorization logic to policies
- [ ] Create helpers for common patterns
### Step 3: Feature Flag & Testing
- [ ] Add `use_rails_views` to Account
- [ ] Implement feature flag logic
- [ ] Test with sample accounts
- [ ] Performance testing
- [ ] Error monitoring
### Step 4: Rollout
- [ ] Internal team testing
- [ ] Beta test with select dealers
- [ ] Gradual rollout to all accounts
- [ ] Monitor metrics
- [ ] Collect feedback
### Step 5: Cleanup
- [ ] Remove block system code
- [ ] Delete admin UI
- [ ] Drop database tables
- [ ] Update documentation
---
## Benefits After Migration
| Aspect | Before (Blocks) | After (Rails Views) |
|--------|-----------------|-------------------|
| **Code** | Custom 1000+ line engine | Standard Rails patterns |
| **Language** | HTML + Handlebars + Ruby | ERB only |
| **Testing** | Integration tests required | Standard view tests |
| **IDE** | No support | Full syntax highlighting |
| **Performance** | Interpretation layer | Direct rendering |
| **Security** | Massive whitelist | Rails authorization |
| **Debugging** | Context tracing | Standard stack traces |
| **CSR UX** | Block admin UI | Standard Rails admin (ActiveAdmin, etc) |
| **Onboarding** | Learn handlebars syntax | Standard Rails knowledge |
---
## Risk Mitigation
### Risks
**Performance**: Template rendering much slower?
- Mitigation: Rails view caching (fragment caching, etags)
- Testing: Benchmark before/after
**Breaking Changes**: Block customizations that can't translate?
- Mitigation: Identify edge cases in Phase 1
- Fallback: Keep Block system for complex accounts
**CSR Disruption**: CSRs dependent on block editor?
- Mitigation: Train on new Rails admin interface
- Timeline: Gradual rollout (6+ months)
**Database Migration**: Data loss from dropping tables?
- Mitigation: Archive block data before deletion
- Backup: Keep block definitions in version control
### Contingency Plans
1. If too many blocks use advanced features:
- Keep blocks for "legacy mode"
- Migrate new features to Rails views
- Hybrid approach long-term
2. If performance regression:
- Implement aggressive view caching
- Use Redis for cache
- Defer to background jobs
3. If CSR adoption slow:
- Extend timeline
- Provide better training
- Create CSR-facing abstraction layer
---
## Next Steps
1. **This Session**:
- Query block 112 structure
- Document current {{}} syntax patterns
- Identify block complexity categories
2. **Next Session**:
- Create first V2 view (appointment form)
- Build presenter/helper structure
- Implement feature flag logic
3. **Future**:
- Beta testing with select accounts
- Performance optimization
- Full rollout plan
---

# PISTN Block System Research - Complete Analysis
**Date**: 2025-10-24
**Status**: Comprehensive production analysis completed
---
## What Are Blocks?
Blocks are PISTN's custom templating engine that allows CSRs (Customer Service Representatives) to create dealer-specific HTML/CSS/JavaScript without code changes. They use a hierarchical structure with `{{variable}}` handlebars-style syntax.
## Key Findings from Production Analysis
### Block 122: Tuffy Appointment Form
- **Size**: 43KB (~1,150 lines)
- **Complexity**: Enterprise-grade form with 4-step wizard
- **Features**:
- Multi-step form with client-side state management
- Inline JavaScript (600+ lines)
- jQuery UI Datepicker integration
- Phone verification modal workflow
- Existing vehicle lookup and selection
- Google Tag Manager event tracking
- 12+ conditional renders based on account settings
- AJAX calls to fetch time slots
### Block Whitelist Security Model
- Massive whitelist of allowed methods (100+ entries) in Block.rb lines 54-137
- Examples: `account.name`, `account.online_scheduling_promo_message`, `account.use_mobile_verification`
- Security by whitelist is manageable but requires constant review
### Database Schema
```
blocks table:
- id, parent_id (hierarchical tree)
- role (semantic: "header", "content", "footer", etc.)
- tag (type classification)
- content (HTML + Handlebars template)
- account_id (NULL = universal, specific = account-only)
- position (float for ordering)
- attrs_data (JSON config)
- editable, wysiwyg, library flags
```
## Why Block 122 Matters
Block 122 represents the **maximum complexity** in PISTN's Block system:
- Multi-step form wizard
- Complex JavaScript behavior
- Account-specific customizations
- Feature flags (phone verification, towing, address fields, costco membership)
- State management across 4 steps
- Form field synchronization to confirmation display
**If Block 122 can be successfully migrated to Rails views, ANY block can be migrated.**
## Migration Strategy Summary
### High-Level Approach
1. **Decompose** the monolithic Block into Rails components
- View partials for each form step
- Presenter for data preparation
- Service classes for validation
- Stimulus controller for JavaScript
2. **Modernize** from inline JavaScript to standard Rails patterns
- Extract 600+ lines to external Stimulus controller
- Replace jQuery with standard fetch API
- Use Rails form helpers instead of raw HTML
3. **Enhance** with Rails conventions
- Active Record validations
- Authorization policies
- Test coverage (unit + integration + E2E)
### 4-Phase Deprecation Plan
1. **Analysis** (in progress): Map all blocks, categorize by complexity ✅
2. **Create Views**: Build Rails replacements (8 weeks per block)
3. **Gradual Migration**: Feature flags, per-account rollout
4. **Decommission**: Remove Block system, clean up database
## Key Technical Insights
### Block.rb Rendering Engine (1014 lines)
- `render(opts)`: Main orchestrator (lines 300-426)
- `subbed_content(opts)`: Template substitution engine for {{}} syntax (lines 436-599)
- `eval_bool(str, opts)`: Evaluate boolean expressions (lines 642-678)
- `eval_str(str, opts)`: Evaluate string expressions with dot notation (lines 680-752)
### Account-Specific Inheritance
- Blocks can be universal (account_id = NULL)
- Or account-specific (account_id = specific account)
- Inheritance: Account-specific > Group > Universal
- Caching layer adds complexity and potential for cache invalidation bugs
### Pain Points Identified
1. **Developer Experience**: 1000+ lines of state machine rendering logic
2. **Maintenance**: Complex caching, N+1 query potential, hard to test
3. **Performance**: Interpretation layer overhead
4. **CSR UX**: Admin UI is clunky, no real-time preview
5. **Architecture**: Views required anyway (blocks are extra layer)
## What We Now Know About Block 122
### HTML Structure
- 4-step wizard form with Bootstrap classes
- Multi-column layout (8-col form + 4-col sidebar)
- Modal for phone verification
- Loading overlay for time slot fetching
- Responsive (mobile-first approach with d-none/d-lg-block)
### JavaScript Requirements
- Step navigation with validation
- Date picker with availability filtering
- Form field → confirmation display binding
- Phone verification with code entry
- Existing vehicle selection with lookup
- Service category loop with checkboxes
- Store hours validation
- Required field validation
### Conditional Rendering
- `account.use_mobile_verification` → Show phone verification section
- `account.show_towing` → Show towing field
- `account.require_addr_for_appt` → Show address fields
- `account.require_costco_membership_number` → Show costco membership field
- `account.render_new_appt_times_string` → Filter calendar or show time dropdown
### Data Bindings
- Form fields sync to confirmation display on change
- Service selections update confirmation service list
- Vehicle selection updates vehicle display
- Date/time selections update confirmation
- Customer name, email, phone update throughout
## Implementation Insights
### Presenter Class Benefits
```ruby
class AppointmentFormPresenter
# Replaces whitelist logic
def show_financing_section?; end
def use_mobile_verification?; end
def require_address?; end
# Clear, testable business logic
end
```
### Service Layer Pattern
```ruby
class ValidateAppointmentService
def perform(account, step, data)
# Complex validation logic
# Returns { valid: true/false, errors: [...] }
end
end
```
### View Decomposition
Instead of 1,150-line monolithic block:
- 120-line main form wrapper
- 80-line step 1 (services)
- 90-line step 2 (date/time)
- 110-line step 3 (customer info)
- 100-line step 4 (confirmation)
- 60-line modal (phone verification)
- Much more readable and testable
## Testing Strategy for Block 122
### Unit Tests (Service Layer)
- Validation logic for each step
- Date validation rules
- Store hours checks
- Phone verification flow
- Vehicle selection logic
### View Tests (Presenter + Partial)
- Conditional sections render correctly
- Form fields present
- Confirmation displays correct data
- Error messages display
### Integration Tests (Controller)
- Multi-step form flow
- AJAX calls (time slots, phone verify)
- Form submission success
- Database state after creation
### E2E Tests (Capybara)
- Complete user flow through all 4 steps
- Phone verification workflow
- Existing vehicle selection
- Error scenarios and retries
- Cross-browser compatibility
## Estimated Effort
- **Presenter + Controller**: 2 days
- **View Partials**: 3 days
- **JavaScript Extraction & Validation**: 5 days
- **Service Classes**: 3 days
- **Testing**: 5 days
- **Bug Fixes & Polish**: 2 days
**Total**: ~3-4 weeks for one block (block 122)
**With learnings applied to subsequent blocks**: 1 week per block
## Next Steps
1. ✅ Complete architectural analysis (done)
2. Create feature flag infrastructure in Rails
3. Build Presenter class for Block 122
4. Create view partials with code examples
5. Extract JavaScript to Stimulus controller
6. Build validation services
7. Create test suite (unit + integration + E2E)
8. Deploy to test account with feature flag
9. Beta test and iterate
10. Gradual rollout to all accounts
## Key Takeaway
**Block 122 is not just a form - it's a complete SPA (Single Page Application) embedded in the Block system.**
Migrating it to Rails views means:
- Taking the logic out of the Block interpreter
- Using proper Rails patterns (presenters, services, partials)
- Making it testable and maintainable
- Enabling future enhancements
The migration is complex but **entirely feasible** and will result in cleaner, more maintainable code.

# Example: Delete api.md from Project KB
curl -X DELETE "http://localhost:8051/api/kb/Project%20KB/documents/api.md"
# Response on success:
{
"success": true,
"message": "Deleted 1 document(s)",
"filename": "api.md",
"kb_name": "Pistn Agent OS"
}
```
### Notes
- Replace `{kb_name}` with the actual KB name (use URL encoding for spaces: `%20`)
- The filename should match exactly what was uploaded
- Deleting a document removes it and all its chunks from the vector database
---
## Method 2: Manual SQLite Query (Alternative)
If the API endpoint has issues, you can delete documents directly from SQLite:
```bash
# Connect to SQLite database
sqlite3 data/claude-os.db
# Find documents to delete
SELECT id, json_extract(metadata, '$.filename') as filename, kb_id
FROM documents
WHERE json_extract(metadata, '$.filename') LIKE '%api.md%'
LIMIT 10;
# Delete specific document(s)
DELETE FROM documents
WHERE kb_id = (
SELECT id FROM knowledge_bases WHERE name = 'Pistn-project_memories'
)
AND json_extract(metadata, '$.filename') = 'api.md';
# Verify deletion
SELECT COUNT(*) FROM documents
WHERE kb_id = (
SELECT id FROM knowledge_bases WHERE name = 'Pistn-project_memories'
);
```
---
## Method 3: Delete All Documents in a KB (Nuclear Option)
**WARNING**: This deletes everything. Use with caution.
```bash
# Delete entire KB and recreate it fresh
curl -X DELETE "http://localhost:8051/api/kb/Pistn%20Agent%20OS"
```
Or via SQLite:
```bash
sqlite3 data/claude-os.db
-- Delete KB and all documents
DELETE FROM documents
WHERE kb_id = (
SELECT id FROM knowledge_bases WHERE name = 'Pistn-project_memories'
);
DELETE FROM knowledge_bases WHERE name = 'Pistn-project_memories';
-- Recreate the KB fresh
INSERT INTO knowledge_bases (name, kb_type, slug)
VALUES ('Pistn-project_memories', 'generic', 'pistn-project-memories');
```
---
## Common Scenarios
### Scenario 1: Remove Old Specs Before Re-importing
```bash
# Delete all spec documents
for spec_file in "spec.md" "requirements.md" "IMPLEMENTATION.md"; do
curl -X DELETE "http://localhost:8051/api/kb/Pistn%20Agent%20OS/documents/$spec_file"
done
# Then re-import fresh versions
curl -X POST "http://localhost:8051/api/kb/Pistn%20Agent%20OS/import?directory_path=%2FUsers%2Fiamanmp%2FProjects%2Fpistn%2Fagent-os"
```
### Scenario 2: Clean Up Old Documentation Before Adding New
```bash
# List what's in the KB
curl -s "http://localhost:8051/api/kb/Pistn%20Agent%20OS/documents" | python3 -c "
import sys, json
docs = json.load(sys.stdin).get('documents', [])
for doc in docs:
print(f'{doc[\"filename\"]}')"
# Delete specific old docs one by one
```
### Scenario 3: Fresh Start (Delete Everything)
```bash
# Delete the entire KB
curl -X DELETE "http://localhost:8051/api/kb/Pistn%20Agent%20OS"
# Recreate it
curl -X POST "http://localhost:8051/api/kb" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{
"name": "Pistn Agent OS",
"kb_type": "agent-os",
"description": "Pistn Agent OS code"
}'
# Re-import everything fresh
curl -X POST "http://localhost:8051/api/kb/Pistn%20Agent%20OS/import?directory_path=%2FUsers%2Fiamanmp%2FProjects%2Fpistn%2Fagent-os"
```
---
## Troubleshooting
### "Document not found" error
The filename might not match exactly. To find the correct filename:
```bash
# List all documents in KB
curl -s "http://localhost:8051/api/kb/Pistn%20Agent%20OS/documents" | python3 -m json.tool
```
### Delete endpoint returns "Not Found"
The endpoint might not have loaded properly. Restart the MCP server:
```bash
# Kill existing server
pkill -f "uvicorn.*8051"
# Restart
source /Users/iamanmp/Projects/claude-os/venv/bin/activate
python /Users/iamanmp/Projects/claude-os/mcp_server/server.py > /tmp/mcp_server.log 2>&1 &
# Wait for startup
sleep 3
# Test
curl -s "http://localhost:8051/health" | python3 -m json.tool
```
---
## UI Delete Functionality
The web UI at http://localhost:5173 currently doesn't have a delete button.
**To add it** (optional enhancement):
1. The frontend would need a "Delete" button in the document list
2. This would call the new `DELETE /api/kb/{kb_name}/documents/{filename}` endpoint
3. See `frontend/src/components/KBManagement.tsx` for where to add this
For now, use the API or SQLite methods above.
---
## Coming Soon
- [ ] UI delete button in Knowledge Base Management
- [ ] Bulk delete by date range (delete all docs older than X days)
- [ ] Archive vs Delete (keep metadata but remove embeddings)
- [ ] Delete confirmation dialog with document preview
# Memory MCP: Persistent Context Across Sessions
**Created**: 2025-10-24
**Status**: Ready for production use
**Location**: `~/.claude/mcp-servers/memory/`
---
## What Is Memory MCP?
Memory MCP is a **persistent memory system for Claude Code** that maintains context across sessions **without requiring knowledge base searches**.
Instead of:
```
You: "Search the KB for Block 122"
→ I search through embeddings
→ Results shown
```
You get:
```
You: "What did we work on yesterday?"
→ I recall from memory automatically
→ Show you complete context
```
## Why This Matters
### The Problem We Solved
**Issue**: Context loss between sessions
- Knowledge base requires explicit searches
- Embedding lookup adds latency (40-50 seconds)
- No automatic recall of recent work
- User must actively ask "search for..."
**Solution**: Memory MCP
- Instant recall (no latency)
- Automatic context reference
- Zero setup required
- Works even when embedding service is down
## Quick Start
### Say "Remember" in Any Session
```
You: "Remember: Block 122 is a 43KB appointment form with 4-step wizard"
→ Automatically saved
```
### I Recall Automatically in Future Sessions
```
You: "What did we work on yesterday?"
→ I search memory and respond:
"Based on our memory, yesterday we worked on:
- Block 122 analysis (43KB, 1,150 lines)
- Created deprecation strategy
- ..."
```
## How It Works
### Architecture
```
Your Request
↓
"Remember: [information]"
↓
Memory Skill (~/.claude/skills/memory/SKILL.md)
↓
MCP Server (server.py)
├─ Parse request
├─ Add/Search/Update memory
↓
JSON File (memories.json)
├─ Store with: ID, title, content, tags, timestamp
↓
Next Session
├─ I search memory when relevant
├─ Recall context automatically
↓
Perfect Context Continuity
```
### Storage Format
```json
{
"memories": [
{
"id": 0,
"title": "Block 122 Analysis",
"content": "43KB appointment form with 4-step wizard...",
"tags": ["Block122", "Architecture", "Complexity"],
"created_at": "2025-10-24T19:43:05",
"updated_at": "2025-10-24T19:43:05"
}
]
}
```
**Storage Location**: `~/.claude/mcp-servers/memory/data/memories.json`
## Commands
### Save (Most Common)
```
Remember: [your information]
Save to memory: [information]
Store this: [information]
Memory: [information]
```
### Recall
```
What did we work on [time]?
Show me my memories about [topic]
Remind me: [topic]
What do we know about [topic]?
```
### List
```
Show all my memories
List my recent memories (last 24 hours)
What memories do I have?
```
### Update
```
Update memory: [title] with [new info]
```
### Delete
```
Forget: [memory title]
Delete: [memory]
```
## Current Memories
Three initial memories were seeded from today's session:
### 1. Block System Deep Dive
```
Title: Block System Deep Dive - Session 10/24/25
Tags: BlockDeprecation, Block122, Architecture, Research, PISTN, Rails
Content: Block 122 analysis (43KB), deprecation strategy, documents created
```
### 2. Memory MCP System
```
Title: Memory MCP System - Created 10/24/25
Tags: MemoryMCP, System, Infrastructure, Claude, Features
Content: Why Memory MCP exists, advantages over KB, how it works
```
### 3. Claude OS TIER 1 Extraction
```
Title: Claude OS TIER 1 Extraction Complete
Tags: CodeForge, PISTN, KnowledgeBase, AutoIndexing, MCP
Content: 130 documents indexed, git hook auto-updating, 495 chunks
```
Try asking: **"What memories do I have?"** to see them!
## Memory MCP vs Knowledge Base
Both are valuable for different purposes:
| Feature | Memory MCP | Knowledge Base |
|---------|-----------|-----------------|
| **Recall Speed** | ⚡ Instant | 🐢 40-50 seconds |
| **Requires Search** | ❌ No - automatic | ✅ Yes - explicit |
| **Use Case** | Recent project context | Searchable knowledge archive |
| **Search Speed** | O(n) - very fast | Embedding lookup - slower |
| **Setup** | 0 steps (works immediately) | Manual indexing required |
| **Works Offline** | ✅ Yes | ❌ Needs Ollama |
| **Format** | JSON (human readable) | Vectors (not readable) |
| **Best For** | Context across sessions | Finding relevant code patterns |
**Together they're perfect:**
- Memory MCP = **What we're working on this week** (recent context)
- Knowledge Base = **How the entire codebase works** (searchable knowledge)
## Examples from Today's Session
## Future Session Example
### Tomorrow, You Could Say:
```
You: "What did we accomplish yesterday?"
→ I search memory automatically
→ "Based on our memory from yesterday:
1. **Block System Research**
- Analyzed Block 122 (43KB appointment form)
- Created 4-phase deprecation strategy
- Built detailed case study with Rails examples
2. **Memory MCP System**
- Created persistent memory system
- No search required - instant context recall
- Works across all sessions
3. **Claude OS Updates**
- Tier 1 PISTN extraction: 130 docs, 495 chunks
- Git hook auto-updates on commits
What would you like to continue with?"
```
## Installation & Setup
### Already Done ✅
All files are already created at:
```
~/.claude/mcp-servers/memory/
├── server.py # MCP server
├── save_memory.sh # CLI wrapper
├── README.md # Full documentation
├── SETUP.md # Quick start
└── data/
└── memories.json # Actual memories
```
### Using It (No Setup Required!)
Just start saying "Remember:" in any Claude Code session. That's it!
## Advanced Features
### Direct CLI Usage
```bash
# Add a memory directly
python3 ~/.claude/mcp-servers/memory/server.py << 'EOF'
{
"action": "add",
"params": {
"title": "My Memory",
"content": "Details here...",
"tags": ["tag1", "tag2"]
}
}
EOF
# View all memories
python3 ~/.claude/mcp-servers/memory/server.py << 'EOF'
{"action": "all", "params": {}}
EOF
# Search memories
python3 ~/.claude/mcp-servers/memory/server.py << 'EOF'
{"action": "search", "params": {"query": "Block"}}
EOF
```
### Backup & Restore
```bash
# Backup memories
cp ~/.claude/mcp-servers/memory/data/memories.json ~/memories_backup.json
# View raw JSON
cat ~/.claude/mcp-servers/memory/data/memories.json | python3 -m json.tool
# Clear all memories (if needed)
rm ~/.claude/mcp-servers/memory/data/memories.json
```
## Best Practices
1. **Be Specific**: "Remember: Block 122 is 43KB" beats "Remember blocks"
2. **Add Tags**: Help future searching ("Block122", "Migration", "Analysis")
3. **Update Often**: Keep memories current as you learn more
4. **Summarize**: Summarize key points rather than dumping huge amounts of text
5. **Use Tags Wisely**: Tags are searchable - pick descriptive ones
## What's Next
### Potential Enhancements
- [ ] Hierarchical tags (#Architecture/Block)
- [ ] Memory versioning (track changes)
- [ ] Export to Markdown
- [ ] Cloud sync across devices
- [ ] Memory importance levels (star/pin favorites)
- [ ] Related memories auto-linking
- [ ] Statistics dashboard
### How You Can Extend
The Memory MCP is open and extendable:
1. **Add new memory types**: Structured data, links, etc.
2. **Integrate with other tools**: Export to Obsidian, Roam, etc.
3. **Add webhooks**: Auto-save from external sources
4. **Create visualizations**: Memory graph, timeline view
## Troubleshooting
### Memory not saving?
```bash
ls -la ~/.claude/mcp-servers/memory/data/
```
### Can't recall a memory?
```bash
# List all memories
echo '{"action":"all","params":{}}' | python3 ~/.claude/mcp-servers/memory/server.py
```
### Server not responding?
```bash
# Test the server
echo '{"action":"all","params":{}}' | python3 ~/.claude/mcp-servers/memory/server.py
```
## The Vision
Memory MCP is part of a complete **knowledge system for PISTN development**:
```
Claude OS KB ← Searchable codebase knowledge
+
Memory MCP ← Recent project context
+
Git Hooks ← Auto-indexing on commits
+
Skills & MCPs ← Automation & tools
=
Perfect Context → You write code that matches your patterns
```
Together, these systems make me a **true expert developer** on your codebase, without you having to repeat context or search for information.
---
## Quick Reference
| Want to... | Say... |
|-----------|--------|
| Save info | "Remember: ..." |
| Recall yesterday | "What did we work on yesterday?" |
| Search memory | "Show me memories about [topic]" |
| List all | "Show all my memories" |
| Update | "Update memory: [title] with [info]" |
| Delete | "Forget: [title]" |
| View raw data | `cat ~/.claude/mcp-servers/memory/data/memories.json` |
---
**You're all set!** Start using Memory MCP by simply saying "Remember:" followed by anything you want me to store. In future sessions, I'll automatically reference this context when relevant.
# Project Analysis Skill
## Purpose
Automatically analyze any project's codebase, specifications, and coding patterns to generate comprehensive documentation for the project_profile MCP. This enables AI assistants to understand:
- **Coding Standards**: Conventions, naming patterns, style guides
- **Architecture**: Design principles, structural patterns, module organization
- **Development Practices**: Workflows, testing approaches, deployment patterns
## How to Use
Simply say one of:
- **"analyze-project: 4"** - Analyze project with database ID 4
- **"analyze: 4"**
- **"project analysis: 4"**
**How it works:**
1. Fetches project from Claude OS using the database ID
2. Registers all 4 MCPs with Claude Code (if not already registered)
3. Analyzes the project codebase
4. Generates 3 documentation files (saved locally)
5. Creates a concise project summary
6. **Displays summary for you to save to Claude's native memory**
7. MCPs are registered but NOT loaded (saves context tokens)
**Example Workflow:**
```
You: "analyze-project: 4"
→ Loads PISTN project from Claude OS (ID #4)
→ Registers 4 MCPs (pistn-project-profile, etc.)
→ Analyzes Rails codebase
→ Generates 3 docs locally
→ Displays summary:
PROJECT: Pistn (ID: 4)
TYPE: Rails
... (save this to native memory)
→ MCPs ready to load on-demand when you need them
```
**Then:**
```
You (saving to memory): "Remember: [paste the summary above]"
When working on PISTN: "Load pistn-project-profile"
→ Loads that specific MCP into context only when needed
```
## What Happens
When you invoke this skill:
1. **Scan the project** for source files, specs, and documentation
2. **Analyze code patterns** - naming conventions, structure, style
3. **Review documentation** - README, spec files, guides
4. **Generate 3 documents**:
- `CODING_STANDARDS.md` - Style, conventions, patterns
- `ARCHITECTURE.md` - Design, structure, principles
- `DEVELOPMENT_PRACTICES.md` - Workflows, testing, deployment
5. **Save locally** to `.claude-os/project-profile/` for reference
6. **Ingest to MCP** (if project_id provided) - Adds docs to the project_profile knowledge base in Claude OS
## Document Structure
### CODING_STANDARDS.md
- Naming conventions (variables, functions, classes)
- Code style and formatting
- File organization
- Import/require patterns
- Comment and documentation style
- Linting/formatting rules
### ARCHITECTURE.md
- High-level design patterns
- Module organization
- Data flow and dependencies
- Database schema (if applicable)
- Key architectural decisions
- Technology stack
### DEVELOPMENT_PRACTICES.md
- Development workflow
- Testing strategy and patterns
- Git workflow (branching, commits)
- Code review process
- Deployment and release process
- Build and deployment pipelines
- Common debugging approaches
## Examples
### Example 1: Analyze a Rails Project
```
You: "analyze-project: /Users/me/Projects/my-rails-app"
→ I scan Rails structure (app/, config/, spec/, etc.)
→ Analyze Models, Controllers, Services, Views
→ Review gems and dependencies
→ Generate 3 docs with Rails-specific patterns
→ Save to mcp/kb/my-rails-app-project-profile/
→ Confirm: "✓ Project analysis complete. 3 docs saved to project_profile KB"
```
### Example 2: Analyze Specific Aspects
```
You: "analyze-project: /Users/me/Projects/api-service architecture"
→ Focus on architecture analysis
→ Generate ARCHITECTURE.md
→ Skip coding standards and practices (or generate minimal versions)
```
### Example 3: Re-analyze Project
```
You: "analyze-project: /Users/me/Projects/my-project"
→ Existing docs are replaced with fresh analysis
→ Useful after major refactoring or architecture changes
```
## Key Benefits
✅ **Consistency** - Apply same analysis to any project
✅ **Speed** - Generate docs in seconds instead of hours
✅ **Comprehensive** - Captures coding style, architecture, and practices
✅ **Automatic Integration** - Syncs directly to project_profile MCP
✅ **Reusable** - Same skill works for Rails, Python, Node, Go, etc.
✅ **AI-Friendly** - Docs enable Claude to write better code for your project
## Technical Details
**Output Location**: `mcp/kb/{project-name}-project-profile/`
**Document Names**:
- `CODING_STANDARDS.md`
- `ARCHITECTURE.md`
- `DEVELOPMENT_PRACTICES.md`
**Integration**: Automatically available in Claude OS's project_profile MCP
**Storage**: SQLite via project_profile knowledge base
**Sync**: Uses Claude OS file watcher for auto-updates
## Supported Project Types
- **Rails** - Ruby on Rails applications
- **Python** - Django, FastAPI, Flask projects
- **Node.js** - Express, NestJS, Next.js applications
- **Java** - Spring Boot, Maven/Gradle projects
- **Go** - Standard Go project structure
- **React** - React applications
- **Generic** - Any project with source code and documentation
---
**Pro Tip**: Run this skill immediately after creating a new project in Agent OS. The generated docs become the foundation for AI-assisted development, ensuring all code generation aligns with your project's patterns and practices.
## Key Design Decisions
### Why Not Index Everything Immediately?
1. **Performance**: Large projects (3000+ files) would take 5-10 minutes upfront
2. **UX**: Users want immediate feedback, not a blocking operation
3. **Incremental growth**: Mirrors natural development—as code changes, context grows
### Why Every 10 Commits?
1. **Timing**: 10 commits ≈ 2-3 hours of typical development
2. **Balance**: Frequent enough to build index quickly, rare enough to minimize overhead
3. **Deterministic**: Easy to predict and adjust
### Why Keep Unindexed Files?
1. **Memory**: Only recently used files need full context
2. **Speed**: Incremental scanning is much faster than full analysis
